At first, Trump said he would debate Kamala Harris, but then he backtracked because he is afraid of her. That’s the real reason; don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Kamala took to X, formerly Twitter, last Thursday to ask, “ What happened to ‘any time, any place’?
Trump will eventually debate her; his oversized ego won’t entertain not doing so. For the time being, here are 21 reasons why he is reluctant to do so right now.
He knows she’s a much better debater than him, given her experience as a seasoned and successful prosecutor, and he is afraid he will lose.
He knows that he lacks self-control and is afraid that he will either make a racist, sexist, or both insults during the debate, which will significantly harm his chances of getting elected.
He believed that he’d only have to debate Biden throughout his entire campaign season, and that was easy for him. Now it’s Kamala, and it's much harder for him, and he isn’t well prepared.
He is suffering from post-traumatic stress from the assassination attempt and is afraid he’ll break down under the pressure of a strenuous debate with Kamala.
He can’t hide any age-related mental decline in a debate with Kamala - it was easier to hide it behind Biden because his age-related mental decline was more advanced.
Melania refuses to come to the debate, and he is afraid that that will make him look like a less put-together candidate than Kamala, who will definitely have her husband, Doug, by her side.
He wrongly believes that Kamala wasn’t democratically elected as the Democratic nominee and doesn’t want to debate what he considers a “rogue” candidate.
He is waiting for the enthusiasm around Kamala to die down first because he knows he cannot win a debate with her being the big favorite right now.
He is in the middle of changing his running mate because JD Vance has screwed up badly, and that’s his priority right now, rather than the debate.
He is waiting for Kamala to announce her VP pick before debating her so that he can attack them both.
He knows that Kamala is a strong ass woman and that his insults won’t destabilize her; they’ll just make her stronger and will lead her to win the debate.
He knows that by taking on Kamala, he is taking on all Black women - Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Beyonce, Viola Davies, Kerry Washington, Gayle King, and many others and that is very daunting to him.
He is a bitter man who finds it difficult to smile and laugh, while Kamala is the opposite—she connects with people better and will come across as a better leader, while he will not.
He wants to do the debate on Fox News rather than on ABC because he thinks he’ll be in friendlier territory with Fox.
He is beginning to realize that his strategy of alienating LGBTQIA folks and pro-choice advocates was dumb, and Kamala will unleash the power of these groups to organize and bring him down.
He is afraid that she’s going to wipe the floor with his toupee.
Trump and his team are still looking for dirt on Kamala to spring on the audience at the debate, but they haven’t found it yet.
He hasn’t recovered from his tantrum from Biden leaving the presidential race and wants to force Biden to debate him rather than Kamala.
He is losing financial support. Elon Musk had said he would contribute $45 million to Trump’s campaign every month but recently withdrew his commitment, citing that he didn’t support “ cult of personality” individuals. That was a direct hit for Trump.
He has post-traumatic stress from his multiple appearances in court over the last few months and cannot stand being in front of a prosecutor.
He is a big, bad bully, and he knows that he has finally met someone who will stand up to him.
I could go on; there are so many reasons why Trump doesn’t want to debate Kamala right now, but I can imagine how all those toxic masculinity MAGA folks and billionaires who support him are egging him to just go for it. And he absolutely will. The reality, however, is that Kamala can absolutely break him the way he broke Biden in the last debate. Ah, as the old saying goes, “revenge is a dish best eaten cold”. Trump has bullied so many people; it’s about time he had a taste of his own medicine.

These reasons are spot on, Rebecca. My husband and I were just discussing the debate over dinner last night, and many of your reasons came up. We cannot wait to see Kamala take on the orange haired racist! We are confident she is going to whip his ass!
On a side note, related to your article on the negative connotation of the word black in the English language, I decided that my new color to use in speaking to imply something negative will be orange :)
He is scared because she’s going to make his babbling ass cry, his spray-on tan will immediately streak, and as he he crumpling into a blithering blob, gravity will flip his fat head will forward, and his cheap synthetic weave will slide onto the floor seconds before he trips on the cuff of his thrift store slacks. When he recovers, he will realize the gates of Hell flew open during that 5 second window of non-altered reality, and that he has arrived safely.
